The General Administration of Press and Publication of China (GAPP) on Monday released an industry analysis report on the press and publications in 2009, the first government-issued, nationwide report on the industry since 1949, Xinhua News Agency reports.
The report, finished by the China Institute of Publishing Science based on a seven-month investigation and statistics conducted by GAPP, analyzes seven aspects of the industry, including the general situation, production structure and organization types. It also unveiled five trends in the industry and 490 sets of industry data, many for the first time.
According to the report, the industry's total nationwide output reached about 1.07 trillion yuan, or 158 billion U.S. dollars, last year, 300 billion yuan more than 2008.
The industry developed particularly well in culturally and economically advantaged regions like Beijing, Shanghai and Guangdong, which contributed 54.5 percent of the total output.
The industry included nearly 4.5 million practitioners from 357,000 organizations in China in 2009. Among them, 96.3 percent were enterprises and 90.8 percent were non-state-owned.
Digital publishing surpassed book publishing in 2009, with mobile publishing income topping the digital publishing sector.
The investigation, starting from October 2009, was the first time for statistics and analysis of the whole industry to be published. It broke through the limitations of old statistical methods so that the latest development of the industry could truly be reflected, said Fan Weiping, director-general of the Publication Industrial Development of the GAPP.
